After my fun experience replacing my gas pedal and turn signal assembly, I noticed some standing water in my battery compartment.

Typical E46 battery location

Turns out my passenger tail light was missing a flange nut, and the lens separated from the light housing. Hopefully fixing the lens and bolting it back in place correctly will keep out any water, otherwise it’ll be time to order new seals for the lights.

I see these posts about e46 problems often enough and yet I still find myself browsing Kijiji every so often for a clean 330i to play with. :/

Most of those posts are from me, but yeah if you have money to burn and can drive a car that isn’t perfect all the time I would highly recommend it.

Yikes - not the place you want standing water. Glad it sounds like a pretty easy fix at least.

They’re old German cars, so they have their issues, but if you have some patience with that, they’re great cars, and a hell of a lot of fun to drive.

Caveat is that the manuals waayyyyy better than the autos (which Party-vi can confirm).

The compartment looks good, but the battery tray has some surface rust on it. I’ll have to hit it with some rust converter and put it back in tomorrow. The lights should just about be cured for reinstallation this evening. I’ll have to test it with the hose tomorrow as well.

Makes sense - now that I think about it, IIRC the tray is very shallow, and water below that ought to drain. Been a while since I looked back there - the car has a battery tender connected, and a case of beer sitting on the trunk right now... :(

Mine sat most of winter because I forgot I never replaced the HCV and instead unplugged it last year for heat. Now I have the best heat, but only heat while it’s unplugged.

Not ideal when it’s warming back up, that’s for sure. That’s not too bad a job though, just flush, change out, re-fill, right?

It’s just a PITA. I’m tired of messing with the cooling system on this thing.

The Achilles heel of the whole damn car...
